Food Shift VISTA Testimonials
Hanna Morris: Food Shift VISTA 2014-2015:
“Being a VISTA at Food Shift provided me with an incredible introduction into the nonprofit world. I was able to learn about so many parts of managing a nonprofit, from grant-writing to volunteer coordination to event planning and more. I felt lucky to be able to play such a big role in an emerging organization when I was just in an entry-level position. Every team member is truly valued and a key player at Food Shift. I would recommend the VISTA position to anyone who is interested in exploring the nonprofit sector and/or wants to make a difference in their every day job!”
Megan Mubaraki: Food Shift VISTA 2015-2016:
“My time as an AmeriCorps VISTA has been truly incredible. I have learned so much from my time with Food Shift, and I cannot highly recommend this position enough.
Throughout my year with Food Shift, I have picked up many skills that have been invaluable to my professional development. I have learned how to prioritize tasks effectively to meet deadlines, communicate clearly with a small team, and juggle multiple responsibilities while still maintaining a healthy work/life balance. I have gained proficiency in a multitude of tools such as Salesforce, Mailchimp, WordPress, and more, which I now feel comfortable using on a daily basis.
Living on the VISTA stipend is definitely challenging, but my year of service has taught me how to apply for the CalFresh Food Stamps program, budget my money carefully, and place increased value on anything I decide to purchase.
The support I’ve had from my coworkers has extended past professional development, and has included help and advice with job searching, apartment hunting, and more. I have loved being a part of the Food Shift team, and every day has been a new adventure of learning, sharing, and working hard to end food waste and hunger. I can’t imagine learning all that I learned anywhere else!”
