Watch Kelly ErnstFriedman Speak on “Rising to the Food Waste Challenge” Panel

02In December, Local Food Lab and Edible Startups hosted a panel highlighting innovative approaches to food waste entitled, “Rising to the Food Waste Challenge.” Food Shift Program Director Kelly ErnstFriedman, along with several other food recovery entrepreneurs and innovators, sat down to discuss the barriers and opportunities in the food waste ecosystem.

Panelists highlighted the barriers of logistics of food recovery and transparency of food waste information, economics that incentivize waste, and cultural norms around food waste. However, they were also quick to point out that the food waste conversation should be about opportunities, not about problems, and that plenty of organizations were working hard to tackle the issue from different intervention points. Food Shift is working to create jobs in the food recovery sector, technologies are being created postpone spoilage by reducing oxygen in packaging, and companies like Good Eggs that dis-intermediate retail altogether.
