As a family, we have always tried to be conscientious about waste. The focus used to be just making sure we minimized the garbage and recycled as much as possible, buying things with less packaging, etc…. Ever since you first posted about food waste, it has made me more aware of the food that gets wasted in our house. Yesterday, as I was shopping for groceries, I really thought about buying only what I knew we would use in the next few days. I picked 3 days as a place to start. What that means is that I bought only what I thought we would eat in the next three days. I imagine I will adjust this based on how things work out, but the goal really is to eat everything we buy, and waste as little, if any, as possible.
I just wanted to thank you, and everyone at Food Shift for bringing this new awareness to our family
“The knowledge and awareness my boyfriend and I have garnered from Food Shift has gotten us to take pause and make small changes in our everyday interactions with food in a way we never thought to before, from making a concentrated effort to purchase the right quantities of produce for our home when we are at the grocery store, to getting creative in cooking with the ingredients we have in our fridge before they go bad, to being more open to consuming food that has gone a little past its expiration date. We are also more careful not to over-order in restaurants and are sure to always take any extra portions to-go. These little everyday changes have helped us reduce our food costs and seriously reduce our waste!”
“The work Food Shift is doing is long overdue. Recognizing the extraordinary level of food waste in the country, she has started her organization as a means of both engaging the true value of that waste as well as the opportunity of turning that waste into a useful enity. I am hopeful that retailers throughout the country will take a serious look at this and welcome the opportunity to make an impact.”
