Food Shift collaborates with event planners, venues and caterers to make events more ethical and sustainable by coordinating and managing the recovery and redistribution of surplus food. Did you know the Good Samaritan Food Act protects food donors nationwide from liability when they donate food to nonprofits?
Food Shift’s service provides a high-touch, customized service tailored to each client and event. We work in tandem with staff, event planners and caterers to coordinate necessary logistics and communications in advance and provide on-site supervision to make sure all surplus food is recovered. This allows both the caterer and the client to be more present and focused during their event while having the outcome of increased sustainability.
“It was a pleasure working with Food Shift. We didn’t have to worry about wasting food and it felt good to know Food Shift would be bringing this delicious food to those in need.” – Izelle Javellana, Special Events Producer, Off the Grid
Our service ensures food safety, organization and distribution of collected food to those in need. Additionally, as we believe food alone isn’t enough to solve hunger, we aim to employ individuals who have barriers to employment so that they may be economically empowered through food recovery and redistribution. With Food Shift, events can align their money and values with a sustainable and ethical solution.
Food Shift is shifting the paradigm around food recovery and food assistance from one that is charity-based to one that provides a professional, reliable service while providing job opportunities for individuals who need jobs the most. We know no one likes wasting food and we know that the Bay Area is full of individuals, organizations and companies who want to do the right thing for the planet and their community. Food Shift makes it easy.
In February Airbnb hired Food Shift to manage the recovery and redistribution of surplus food from their four-day, 800 person all-staff convention. Food Shift worked closely with Off the Grid, La Cocina, Paula le Duc and other vendors to ensure 1,855 lbs. was kept out of the landfill and redistributed to food assistance agencies throughout the city. Our other clients include BALLE, Bioneers, and Centro Community Partners. Learn more and read testimonials from our clients here.
