Food Shift's
Jedi Consulting

Food Shift offers training and consulting services to establish organizational practices that arise from values of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI).

Why is a nonprofit which sits at the intersection of climate change and food insecurity offering justice, equity, diversity and inclusion (JEDI) services? Because JEDI is our core value and part of our mission.

We strive to identify and implement holistic solutions that are:

  • For the people (not asking people to lean into and perpetuate the broken system),
  • By the people (to see people we serve as people we serve with, as part of the solution), and
  • With the people (to travel the path together so that we are collaborative, not competitive, to result in a more resilient community overall).

JEDI is at the heart of climate and food justice. We see it as part of our mission to continue to learn and challenge ourselves to exercise our JEDI values and share with others on this journey.

Developing a JEDI Lens:

An Interactive & Exploratory Workshop

Over 300 community leaders have taken this 2-hour virtual session designed for individuals and organizations working toward:

  • Anti-racist, anti-oppressive practices
  • Understanding and addressing intersecting forms of bias and power (racism, sexism, ableism, etc.)
  • Practicing inclusive leadership
  • Embedding equity into organizational culture and systems

Designed for maximum interaction, participants are required to complete pre-work (no more than 45 minutes) before the session date to cover some basic information on their own. Each participant is assigned to a breakout room for engaged discussion tailored to their background. Special post-session (usually a day after the session) for BIPOC participants to unpack any experiences that came up during the session.

We use actual examples and storytelling as a way to bring the topic to life, but participants need not be in nonprofits or working within the food industry. Appropriate for any level and background. The session is facilitated in English, with some pre-work material available in Spanish.

Your investment:

  • Community/Nonprofit: $95 per person
  • Businesses: $150 per person

Because we do not want anyone committed to the JEDI path to be turned away due to the cost, scholarships and mutual aid arrangements are available. Please inquire.

Hear from our JEDI consulting clients

This [JEDI workshop] has been eye opening and transformative, both on a personal and organizational levels.

Anya Deepak

I appreciate how the workshop approached the heaviness of the topic with hope, preparation, and forward-thinking. Kudos to the Food Shift Team for being leaders in this space.

Benita Brisco

Catalyst Kitchens

I can’t say I’ve attended anything quite like it: insightful, practical and wise. It’s already given me some new language and ways of framing some of the issues I’ve observed to be a more insightful researcher.

Kirsten Moy
Aspen Institute Fellow (retired)

It is a powerful educational resource for those committed to creating inclusive work spaces. Yuka is an amazing teacher and I highly recommend it!

Olivia Maki
Bio-Logical Capital

I have been totally swimming in the dark, even though I am in a network with people of color. This meeting got to the heart of the challenges I’m facing with attracting POC [people of color] board members. By developing and adopting a different lens Yuka suggested, I was able to identify key sources for revitalizing my board in a way that reflected the diversity we need for our mission. Within a day of speaking with her, we were able to welcome a POC board member!
